Text Ads – Love Them or Hate Them

textWell I have been wanting to do this post for so long and finally am getting a chance to get it wrote up as I think about it every time I am surfing.  Text Ads – Love Them or Hate Them.

From what I see most everyone must hate them as they are the most unused source of advertising out there and to me one of the best.  If you are not using text ad and hate them then maybe after I tell you why I love them – you will reconsider.

The first thing I have always heard from people the reason they don’t use them is that they don’t know what to put, they are not good at writing, they are more of a copy and paste person – well BINGO – let’s make it easy for you – pay attention the next time you are surfing and if you see something that catches your eye – copy and paste it to a notepad file like I do – people do this all the time they are call swipe files.

Google Swipe Files sometimes and you will find that some of the best advertisers and copywriters all have swipe files.  You may run across a line that catches your eye copy and paste it for later use.  I have got so I even listen to commercials on TV more and jot down things that I think I will be able to use.

Now once you have your swipe file – now it’s time to take advantage of the BEST (JMO) and most unused advertising out there and here are some of my reasons.  Text links are hardly ever used – there is not much competition – you link will get seen.   AND people do click on them as I have been tracking and I have to say my text links brings me just as many referrals as my other forms of advertising.

Now most site owners are not going to like me saying this but they are practically giving you your BEST advertising on a silver platter.  In the TE’s do you see in most of the prizes that you win it’s FREE text impressions and not just a few either.  AND have you paid attention that for one credit – you sites gets seen ONE time and competes with how many other sites for that view.   Yea, think about it now.

The next time you login, pay attention and you will see what I am saying.  One credit can get you anywhere  from 5 – 40 views.  So think about this you have people surfing and I have Why Zaney Clicks? as a text link – do YOU know how many times that is going to pop up for people to see – oh I know what you are thinking – people don’t look at them anyway.

You are wrong – test it for yourself.  I am always testing that is why you see me changing and making new splash pages, new colors, new graphics, new banners, new text links.  This is what you have to do and you will find that people do click text ads and that you will get referrals from them.

The other place that they are given out freely and under used is TAE (text ad sites)  and I know what you are thinking already – I can’t afford to buy points to get my stuff to show.  You don’t have to 99% of the time you can post text links/ads for free and what makes this so good is that they not only click your link for points – you are keeping what your are promoting in front of them.

Thomas Smith wrote a guide called Successful Advertising in 1885.[6] The saying he used is still being used today.

The first time people look at any given ad, they don’t even see it.
The second time, they don’t notice it.
The third time, they are aware that it is there.
The fourth time, they have a fleeting sense that they’ve seen it somewhere before.
The fifth time, they actually read the ad.
The sixth time they thumb their nose at it.
The seventh time, they start to get a little irritated with it.
The eighth time, they start to think, “Here’s that confounded ad again.”
The ninth time, they start to wonder if they’re missing out on something.
The tenth time, they ask their friends and neighbors if they’ve tried it.
The eleventh time, they wonder how the company is paying for all these ads.
The twelfth time, they start to think that it must be a good product.
The thirteenth time, they start to feel the product has value.
The fourteenth time, they start to remember wanting a product exactly like this for a long time.
The fifteenth time, they start to yearn for it because they can’t afford to buy it.
The sixteenth time, they accept the fact that they will buy it sometime in the future.
The seventeenth time, they make a note to buy the product.
The eighteenth time, they curse their poverty for not allowing them to buy this terrific product.
The nineteenth time, they count their money very carefully.
The twentieth time prospects see the ad, they buy what is offering.

DID YOU SEE THIS – 20 times – so you tell me where are your going to get your site, product, whatever you are promoting seen.  Now I’m tell you to try this because what will happen is that it takes them what 5 times before they read it – well that 5th time they read it well I want them down to that seventh, eight, ninth time seeing it when my ad shows up in rotation – WHY they are more likely going to click on it because you already have them interested and they are thinking I might be missing something.

Ok I could go on and on here but I think you get the idea – so lets get out there and test some text ads – let me know if you love them or hate them

  1. This is why I have started a group like GYBF as it encoourage internet marketers to put more efforts in educating themselves being better at both ad writing and also writing articles.Education is a good thing!

  3. Nancy,
This is a good post and you really are right. Personally many times I think we just kind of go by what others say or what we have heard through the grapevine as to what things work and what don’t without checking it out for ourselves.

You are also right that people should test things. I will admit I am one of the worst for not doing and and as a marketer I am so ashamed of myself. 🙂 Great post girl!

  4. Nancy – Nancy – Nancy,
you are letting the cat (<Zaney reference intended) out of the bag.
Text Ads are definitely the most under utilized advertising resource on most traffic exchanges.

Yes- you can normally get 30-40-50 times more views per credit than site views.
Yes- you can get noticed by using text ads.
Yes- you can make your advertising stand out with a good text ad.
Yes- many TE owners practically give them away.
Yes- you can develop a brand using text ads.

Even though you have shared a ton of great info, it is unfortunate 95% of the people who read your post will still NOT take action.

I hope to see some Action Takers utilizing more text ads!

  5. What a great contribution to the debate about text ads. Many members of traffic exchanges do not use all the services a traffic exchange offer in terms of marketing their products or services. That’s why I have a rule that my members have to add a page, a banner and text ad to and have credits assigned to them in order to earn commission and get their prizes in the competitions we offer.

Thank You for the insight and for sharing.

  6. Hi Nancy,
I have been using text ads for my personal branding (anybody seen Diane Cooke recommends… [are you on 20 times yet LOL]) It takes sooo long to get everything set up though and I just love to surf especially when I win competititions. However, not much point in joining, surfing and winning if I dont advertise (doh!)
So, shhhh! keep your hands off me text ads. They are mine, all mine muuhahaha!
p.s. Great article. I am glad that you got around to posting it.

  7. I read this entire article and I love it! I agree with every word written. I, too, never understood the importance of text advertising but recently (maybe months) I have “bumped up” my text advertising immensely. This is great info here. Great writing. Love them or hate them! I love them!

  8. Great post! I use my text credits, don’t get many clicks BUT I do what you do and look at the others and see which ones got my attention the most and use something either similar or just copy. Here’s one that I have for AdOne Ten and/or sticker sites that I was just playing around with and didn’t think it would get clicks “Like it sticky? Click HERE” I never ever thought it would get clicks but it’s my highest clicked one for stickers LOL 🙂

    • Thanks for the comment Bree and you are right – you just never know and why I tweak and test, tweak and test and like I said in the post – you never know for sure the true results because they may have clicked on your site because of seeing the text link

  9. I glad to here how I can getting those text ads, because I never know what to put for a site I want to put in a text ad.
    Thank you very much
    Barb

    • Thanks Barbara and glad that this post helped – I remember when I first started I had no clue and I’m sure you can tell by now from my emails that I’m just a country bumpkin so I am always learning and love sharing with others.

  10. Nancy,

What a great blog post!! You outdid yourself and there is a reason for everything I have been told. You wanted to write this post for a while and in my opinion, you wrote it at the right time. I will be looking forward to more of your “nuggets of wisdom.” I need all the information I can get starting as a new te owner.

When I grow up, I want to be just like you. 🙂 Thanks for the info and I have started using text ads more often.

    • Thanks Mary for the comment and I have so many can’t say “nuggets of wisdom” but they just might be as I got them at the school of hard knocks – learning everything the hard way and lotssssssssssssssssssssss of mistakes

    • Thanks Xarah – nice to see you and text ads can be use all over and tweaking them to where people click on them can also make good headlines and subject lines also. So I feel that text links are a great way of testing all this. Thanks for the comment.

  11. Hi Nancy,
Thanks for the great article, I must say I have never really put much effort into text ads. Oh I do them as Doug says they are important, I did not really think they were so never put trackers on…you have really made me think.
I will now take notice and put more effort into mine.
    Thank you,
    Rina Van Der Berg

  12. Nancy I just love your blogs you also provide such useful information. I do the same thing I have a file for text ads template and I add on to it all the time. This is the time to advertise on text ads because it is a lost art of advertising and that open it up big for the ones to use it.

How do you test all your pages? Do you use a tracker to test them? I know I have one site that everyone has told me its really hot but on my tracker no views so that tell me it isn’t a good site.

    Thanks Again,
    Veronica
    “I love learning”…sometimes don’t have enough patience.

    • Thanks Veronica for the comment and glad that you enjoy the blogs and use text links/ads. I do not track each link like I should but if you look on most sites will give you the stats right on their site – so most of the time I keep changing things till I see some people clicking and then I will add a tracker to it then and reset my stats on the site also each time I change things.

You are right and you can never go by what is working for others because it may work for them but not for you – there are many reasons that a person will say a site is “hot”. So you are better off just doing your own testing, tweaking until you find what is going to work for you and when you do – keep doing it.
