Did you just close the door in my face?

I’m sure this is a topic that everyone has gone thru now and then and with so many sites out there – just how well is your customer service. Do you really want me to use your site or did you just close the door in my face?

slamdoorWhen I first opened my mailer, Zaney Mailz, I looked around and thought that some of the extra mods that I was seeing would kinda be nice to add but I always like to try mods out and see how easy they are to use and how I feel when I do.

Well the one that I am considering is the claim this spot as that is my choice if I want to use it and sometimes I have the time – so that one is not so bad.

The one that really has started to make me feel like you don’t want me to use your site is the one that I HAVE to read 2, 3, 5, 10 and even 20 emails before I can send my own.  Well did you just close the door in my face?

After using mailers more and more, I have joined and use mailers alot even more so after Marty’s great site Referral Frenzy  But the one thing that I am finding is that I really don’t like to be told I can’t come into your site (store) unless I read emails.

AND yes I am aware that the idea behind a mailer is to get people to read emails but there are other ways to coach them or give them a reason to want to read on your site.  It has gotten to the point that I have separated off the sites from my list that force me to read and yea you guessed it – don’t use as often.

When I started looking at this list, I didn’t realize how many there really was, but for me I am more apt to go and use a site that I feel welcome, where I can run in and get done what I need – you do have to keep in mind that lot of people are strapped for time.

opendoorSo, bottom line – don’t force me to read emails to use your site as the more that I have to do that to less I’m going to use your site.  AND if I upgraded on your site and you are still forcing me read emails – well shame on you as you just lost a sale.  There is a reason that I bought the upgrade so that I would have the credits to mail my emails – and not feel – Did you just close the door in my face?

Now I would love to hear the pros and cons on this – so leave me a comment and let me hear your side.  Thanks in advance.

  1. I completely agree Nancy and I have stopped using those mailers almost altogether.
Only once in while since I don’t want to waste my upgrade.

Forced reading of email creates a higher CTR.

But it is a manipulated CTR so not a true CTR

  2. Hello! Nancy,

I have a few select Mailers where I read every email that is delivered to my email box. But very few of those, due to time restrictions.

As a fellow Mailer Owner, I can understand the concept behind requiring members to read emails, but I do not use that requirement as I feel my Members know why they “should” read emails, but I don’t feel I should “force” them to read emails.

High CTR’s are cool, however, are the “results” just as good as allowing Members to choose whether or not they are going to read emails from your site today?

Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this matter! A good point to ponder!

    • Well when I first seen this I thought wow what a great idea but the more that I was using it the more irritated that I was getting – I even cancel my upgrades as if I have credits that I bought from you to send my emails then let me.

You also brought up a good point are the people you forcing to read my email – are they really seeing it or just watching that timer run down so they can move on. Also if a site is forcing members to read emails – yes pay attention when they boost high CTR’s

  3. Nancy,

I agree with everything you said. Friends ask me to join for them so they can get referrals. Then the Mailers is one that you have to surf 5 sites before you can send.
I just put them on vacation to never return.

Why have a mailer with restrictions? As Nancy says time is money.

  4. I agree 1000% on this one. I very much dislike being forced to complete any task before I can use a site to advertise. I don’t care if the requirement is open 1 email, it slows be down. When I am mailing – I am mailing. I don’t want to stop and open mails. When I am opening mails to gain credits, I am concentrating only on that task.

Like you, the sites that have that requirement, I rarely use, if at all.

  5. Nancy,
You are so right. I belong to one mailer and did upgrade thinking that at least my email would be cleared out and to my surprise it wasn’t then…

I went in to the email and was going to opt out of the emails thinking that maybe that was what I had to do and guess what…not!

I got out of that one ASAP! I hope some of those are paying attention to what you are saying maybe they will change it.

  6. I am a free member on a lot of mailers and have to read those emails, 5 or ten, so that isn’t so bad. I don’t see why people complain of reading 5 emails, which doesn’t take that much time to do. If I can get people to see my ads by me reading the emails I am all for it.

But clicking for email credits is hard to do sometimes.

    • well I agree you want people to read your ads but I want to be able to do it on my own time. When I need credits, then I will go read emails to build back up my credits. I just don’t want to have to be told that I have to read them now – like Cathy said I’m there to mail

  7. Hello Nancy,

For free members, I think it’s not so bad to ask them to open a few emails before sending one. After all, many people who remain free members don’t realize that time is money, so I believe they are used to open a lot of emails in the first place.

But for upgraded members, I think it’s wrong. They pay to be able to send more emails, because they want to save time and reach more people faster. Forcing them to open some emails doesn’t make a lot of difference to them in terms of earning credits, imo, and I so agree with you and Cathy that, when you log in because you’re ready to send an email, you don’t want to be distracted by this silly requirement.

    • Thanks Philippe – there are many ways to get members to click and the owners shouldn’t be so lazy and come up with ways to make people want to open emails at their sites.

  8. I don’t use safelists much any more, way too much time invested for a small return. But when I do, I’ll spend a day going through all the ones I want to use, read enough at each to build up some decent credits to mail the following day. But when I go to send out all the mailings I want the following day, I’m frequently forced to stop and read even more emails just for the privevledge of using all the credits I earned the day before. It’s like paying a tax on a tax.

  9. I post to safe list everyday, I pay to upgrade at alot of sites then still are force to look at emails when I feel I shouldn’t have to do that. I even talk to different owners about this same subject belive it or not over the pass week.

    • Well I have separated these sites and I know the ones that I will not buy from as it don’t pay if they are still going to force me to click and some of them have some really great oto’s that I would have bought but why?

  10. Hey, I just found your post and I must say I usually agree with you.

Asking people to click is sad and I hate that I have to do it.
However, many mailer that ask me to click are giving me good results and, so I am still using those.

Also, did you look at Golden Chest Mailer mods? I like the idea, they force to click, but user see the email before being able to click, so at less the clicker read email subject and see email content before being redirected to the site!

Anyways, I still do not have it on my site and will not.

    • Thanks for your comment and glad that you found my blog

I have my mailers all filtered in gmail in their own separate file folder and when I need credits then I go to that folder and click
and when I do I usually will click and read for awhile as there are many reasons that I do that.
One, I like to see what headline caught my eye and which one did not
Two, I like to see how others layout their email
Three, I like to learn what to do and not to do in my emails
Forth, then I take all I have learned and and then go to the site to mail

See I’m done clicking email, I’m ready to mail then as I usually have a new test one that I just put together from what I learned
and want to test it. I just want to login, copy and paste at that point as I know I have plenty of credits. AND if there is a
site that I login and they have a great OTO – then I might buy that so I don’t have to click as many next time. BUT what really
is disappointing is that if I just went thru all that – the site still wants me to click more emails and I just don’t think that
      is right.

I have heard from some that if you were upgrade then you would not get that – well let’s be realistic – a person CANNOT upgrade
at every site they join that is why I buy oto’s instead when I need to buy

When I first started with mailers, I have to say that I thought this mod was great and even thought about buying it for my
mailer but glad I held off as the more I am strapped for time the more I really hate it. I know most think that clicking
on 2, 3, 5, 10, and even 20 emails is not time consuming but when I’m in the mailing mode – I just want to mail period.
